The Sardine Fork

In the early 20th century, sardine forks were a staple in fine dining settings, reflecting a time when specialized utensils were crafted for nearly every culinary experience. These small, often ornate forks were designed with special tines, perfect for delicately lifting sardines or other small fish from the can without breaking them.

Nuri Sardine Fork: Beautiful to behold, satisfying to use

I am a silverware connoisseur, and I took these factors into account while rating this fork: heft, aesthetics, finish, utility, and sturdiness. First off, the box is adorable. It has a smooth finish printed in a fresh and bright yellow, with a nice magnet closure- I will keep it forever and store the fork within. This little fork is beautiful: it has the raised fish design on the handle, and the logo at the base of the tines. It works a bit like a draining spatula, allowing you to lift the delicate fish from the tin, while also leaving the oil free to flow away through the additional holes at the roots of the tines. The slots themselves are tapered, meaning the tines are more triangular than spear-like. This baby was made for lifting, not spearing. And at the same time, if shredding the fish is important, the tines are perfect for flaking the fish as well. The handle shape feels like it should not be grasped like a pencil, but rather pinched between your thumb and the middle phalanx of the forefinger as if one was competing in an egg relay. In terms of heft, the fork is not too heavy but it is reassuringly dense, as if it is made of quality material. The silver finish is shiny and matches what is shone in the images. This fork is beautiful, useful, and strong; it also made a lovely gift.
